15 day Retreat at Nature Cure Centre

Armed with my history of Diabetes, I was ‘led’ to Ratanveer Nature Cure Centre for a
15 day stay.

A bit of frustration had been building over the last couple of months for no
apparent reason. There was also this feeling that I had already done what I was
meant to do in this lifetime. I felt that taking a break away from the energies
of the home and business will help me get my reason for being alive all over
again.

So I checked into this place with no human agenda of losing weight, that I had
read about, or ‘curing’ my diabetes.

The following was the routine at the centre:

- Morning walk followed by a cup of Warm water with Methi seeds
soaked overnight and then eye-wash with Trifla water.
- 6 AM to 7.30 AM – Sukshma Yogic Vyayama followed by a few
 yogasanas and pranayama.
- 8 AM – Light Breakfast
- 9 AM to 1130 AM and again from 3 PM to 530 PM – Nature Cure
therapies consisting of Mud Packs, Abdominal Pack, Spinal Pack,
Knee Pack, Ayurvedic Massage, Potli Massage (a form of Ayurvedic
Massage where hot oil is used), Hydro Therapies, Mud Baths etc.
- 930 AM – Doodhi Juice
- 12 Noon – Light lunch consisting of couple of rotis, lightly oiled
vegetable, sprouts, salad and a glass of buttermilk (for diabetics) OR
3 different fruits for people wanting to lose weight.
- 230 PM – Karela juice for diabetics and fruit juice for others
- Light Dinner at 6 PM
- 730 PM to 830 PM – Lecture on some health related issues

It was practically a very low salt and almost no sugar kind of diet.

After effortlessly falling into this routine I got bored after about a week of
eating the food at lunch time and not getting my morning quota of fruits.
[I have already shared elsewhere that my usual routine is fruits for breakfast
and then dinner at around 7 or 7.30 pm most weekdays. I do take a couple of
cups of tea/coffee at work with a couple of biscuits.] I therefore requested
the Senior Naturopath to put me on a fruit-lunch diet. I guess I was a bit
jealous of watching people eat the juicy mangoes at lunch and not getting any.
Dr. Chaturvedi was kind enough to agree on the condition that my Blood
Sugar tests came up ok the next day.

I dare say that I too was a bit surprised when I looked at the following results
of my tests done the next day! The results were considerably lower than what
I had got since Aug-Sep 2008. The doctor had no problems putting
me on a fruit-lunch diet for three days with the condition that I give a feedback
regularly over the next three days about my blood sugar situation.

The following readings were taken over the next few days. The mangoes etc.
apparently did not hurt my cause. I also stopped taking the Karela juice on
June 24, 2011 as I felt that my body did not need it any more.

Finally, it was time to leave and the following readings would make anyone
happy, especially with the history of blood sugar that I had:

Is this the break-through that I had been waiting for?
Is it going to be permanent now?
Only time will tell...

I checked out of the Nature Cure Centre lighter by about 5.5 kgs and with a set
of instructions about what kind of diet and lifestyle would be good for me.

I came back home almost certain that I will not follow these instructions every
day of my life for the rest of my life. I did try to be on the raw food, no
alcohol, no tea kind of routine back in 1994 and it did not last long as life did
become a bit dull and boring.

Attending parties, eating out, eating junk food at times, drinking occasionally
are integral parts of my life. I mean, there is no way that I can not eat the
delicious food that my better half keeps on cooking for the family. Likewise,
how can I refuse to eat the slices of the yummy cakes that my daughters keep
on baking every now and then? Then there are the chocolates and pedas that
are offered when someone is celebrating something good that has
happened in his/her life. I just can not resist the bhajias and dal-wadas when
it rains. I also love to eat kebabs and biryani when I can. Life would not
be worth living without all these.

It’s been five days since I have been home and we have already partied one
night and eaten out another time. I have not yet got back to the routine of
checking my blood sugar which I will be starting in a day or two after I get
these posts online.

This time around I know that I will need to be real serious about my journaling
as I would like to add details of the food eaten and the stresses in life which
are bound to crop up every now and then.

Only then will I be able to know what effects all these have on my blood sugar
levels and what needs to be done. Hope I am able to stick to it as it does tend
to get a bit tedious keeping track of everything that is happening in life and
of every bit of food that is going in.

In a way, this time spent at the nature cure centre has given a new sense of
purpose to life. This by itself had made my stay at Ratanveer worth every
rupee that I spent there. And more!

About Surinder
Am working as a healing facilitator using the techniques of Reiki, Crystals, Breathing and Food as therapy. Got into this field accidentally. Now this is what I love doing. This space is primarily for posting results of my blood sugar tests along with details of all the factors that I think influence them. The general impression about Diabetes is that it is a companion for life. I disagree and am positive that it's just a matter of time before the truth will reveal itself. I am sharing what I have learnt (and am in the process of learning) about what all can affect human health at my other space aashirwadhealing.com
